Congratulations to Lily Maryo, who has been selected as recipient of Sonderlust’s inaugural Bloom Bursary.
Lily was nominated by her friend Georgina, and was selected by a panel of 8 readers from across Canada out of 44 gorgeous applications.
We were truly blown away by all of the ways women are currently making their own. Thank you, each of you, for all that you do for our world.
More on Lily below:
Lily has spent the last several years almost single-handedly running an after-school Homework Club. She and a small group of volunteers offer free tutoring and recreation for African youth, specifically focusing on youth from South Sudan. Immigrant and second-generation youth from South Sudan face several barriers when it comes to getting the support they need: discrimination experienced by children of colour in education, a lack of representative role models in the school staff, and their parents may not have the educational background to help with their homework because their own schooling was interrupted by the civil war. Lily (who is South Sudanese herself) and the volunteers are able to address all these things. It’s also worth mentioning that Lily is doing this while working, and studying for her Masters.
